Vatricania

FamilyCactaceae.

Origin. Eastern Bolivia.

Description. Some experts classify this cactus as belonging to the genus Espostoa, but most gardeners know it under the name Vatricania. This columnar plant branches from the base and has up to 15 pale green, erect stems. The largest specimens grow up to 2 m and higher with a diameter of about 10 cm. The cactus is interesting for its thin, yellowish-brown spines, growing in large numbers from each areole. In the part of the stem where the flowers appear, a lateral cephalium is formed of small rust-colored bristles, 40 cm long. Creamy white, spectacular bell-shaped flowers, 6 cm across, bloom at night. With proper care it grows quickly, especially with sufficient lighting and good feeding - up to 20 cm of growth every year.

Height. Up to 2 meters.

Home care

Temperature conditions

During the winter dormant period, keep the cactus in a cool, bright place. Withstands temperatures as low as 7°C if kept dry, but the trunk may be damaged at low temperatures.

Vatricania

Lighting

Very bright lighting with slight shading on hot summer days.

Care

Vatricania is not often grown, but 3-year-old seedlings are very beautiful. Requires a spacious site, nutrient-rich soil mixture and full sun. Withstands cold winters in the dark. In the European climate, flowering can only be expected from plants over 20 years old. Reduce watering and fertilizing in the fall so that the cactus goes into a dormant period.

Substrate

Fertile, well-drained soil mixture with coarse sand.

Feeding

During the growing season, fertilize cacti and succulents monthly.

Flowering time

Early summer.

Vatricania

Air humidity

The dry air of heated rooms is excellent; it does not require spraying, unless it is to prevent the appearance of pests.

Soil moisture

Water the plant generously, but allow the soil to dry before the next watering. Drought resistant.

Transplant

Vatricania is replanted every year in the spring, as it grows, into a larger pot.

Reproduction

Side shoots or seeds.

Pests and diseases

Susceptible to fungal diseases, it is not as sensitive to waterlogging as many other cacti, but stagnation of water in the cold season will cause root rot.

Of the harmful insects, the main dangers are spider mites, scale insects, and mealybugs.
