Care at home

Temperature conditions

Sophronitis prefers cool conditions and does not like summer heat. In summer, when the orchid forms pseudobulbs, it needs warmth with a slight drop in temperature at night. In the fall, when the pseudobulbs have finished growing, it is necessary to move the plant to a warm room with a temperature of 14 - 17 ° C. For abundant flowering, it is advisable to arrange daily temperature differences with a difference between day and night values of 6 ° C.

Lighting

A location with lots of reflected sunlight.

Care

Sophronitis is not recommended for novice hobbyists to grow - this orchid needs a strictly defined temperature regime and high humidity.

Substrate for orchids

A rough mixture for orchids containing sphagnum moss, pieces of spruce or pine bark. The soil should contain pumice, perlite or coarse river sand to improve drainage.

Feeding

During the growth period, the bushes respond positively to fertilizing, which is done once a month. Use orchid fertilizer diluted to half the recommended dosage. Do not fertilize in winter.

Flowering time

Spring, with good care, re-blooming may occur throughout the year - in the fall.

Air humidity

High air humidity is very important for orchids. Place the plant on a tray of damp pebbles to increase humidity, or use a room humidifier. Make sure the bottom of the plant pot is above the water level in the tray. Daily spraying can be done with soft water at room temperature, being careful not to get it on the flowers and buds. Good air movement allows stagnant water to evaporate faster.

Watering

Heavy and regular watering during the growth period should be replaced by very sparing watering during the winter months if the plant is kept cool. For irrigation, use softened water.

Transplant

Replant once every 1 - 2 years using the transshipment method. Sophronitis does not like root damage.

Reproduction

By division during transplantation.

Pests and diseases

Harmful insects may include aphids, whiteflies, and thrips.
